Highlights of this meeting’s Agenda include:

Consider Approval of 2024-2025 Compensation Plan

The NBISD Board of Trustees unanimously approved a 4-percent pay raise for all eligible employees. The raise is part of a compensation package of $2,760,430.

Employees who enroll in district insurance plans will also receive an extra $10 per month to help cover the increasing costs of TRS Active Care insurance. TRS Active Care insurance is increasing by 13.3 percent for the 2024-25 school year.

“This raise is a testament to the Board’s commitment to supporting and valuing the hard work and dedication of our staff members,” said Dr. Laurelyn Arterbury. “We would like to thank the Board for their decision to invest in our staff. Their support reflects that our educators are appreciated for their contributions to the success of our students.”

Scorecard Update Regarding Efficient Operations

Priority four of the district scorecard outlines guidelines for efficient district operations. The three main goals of this priority are to ensure financial stewardship and transparency, to develop and deploy facility management processes to address district’s fast growth, and to ensure efficient and effective operations.

This report given by Dr. Laurelyn Arterbury, NBISD Superintendent, focused on goal 4.2, which develops and deploys the facility management process to address the district’s fast growth.

The discussion included an update on the Scorecard Report from January 2024, outlining the next steps in long-range planning for NBISD. The NBISD Administration proposed that the district engage in a Comprehensive Strategic Planning process involving students, staff, parents and community members. The strategic planning process will allow NBISD to inventory current strategic and historical documents to honor the work of leaders who came before us while simultaneously setting a vision and direction for the future of NBISD built upon community input and guidance.

Corey Ryan, Partner at Education Elements, presented an overview of the strategic planning process for NBISD, which is set to begin in June 2024.

Consider Approval of Textbook and Instructional Materials Adoption

The board approved the adoption of textbook and instructional materials which includes Science K-12, Personal Financial Literacy and Economics, and multiple Career and Technology courses.

Each year, TEA issues a proclamation for textbooks and instructional materials that are up for adoption. NBISD receives a lump sum of money from the state to use over two years to purchase these new textbooks and instructional materials. NBISD formed a textbook committee which is composed of teachers, curriculum support staff, and administrators.

District textbook committee members, as well as campus and district staff, have reviewed numerous textbooks and instructional materials in order to make appropriate adoption recommendations in subject areas denoted by Proclamation 2024, which includes Science K-12, Personal Financial Literacy and Economics, and multiple Career and Technology courses.

Many NBISD teachers have spent months reviewing instructional material samples and discussing options with the district curriculum specialists, the Director of Curriculum and Professional Development, and the Director of Career and Technical Education. Each of the campus representatives consulted with other teachers on their campus to identify the strengths and weaknesses of each instructional option. The textbook selection representatives dedicated many hours to this adoption process and made informed decisions that will serve all students of NBISD well.

Consider Approval of Annual Technology Refresh Purchases

The Board approved the annual technology refresh hardware for a total of $1,533,218.06.

In an effort to provide NBISD staff and students the most up to date technology hardware, we adhere to our technology road-map of a five-year refresh cycle for staff/classroom computers and a four-year refresh cycle for staff and student 1:1 mobile hardware. This refresh plan was adopted in 2010, and since 2018, we have asked voters to approve technology bonds to help fund our technology needs.
