New Braunfels ISD is pleased to announce that Russell Doege has been named the new Assistant Director of Athletics. Doege comes to NBISD via Comal ISD, where he served as an assistant principal at Smithson Valley High School.

“It’s an honor and a privilege to come work for New Braunfels ISD. I will be committed to the student-athletes of this district so that they are able to reach their highest potential athletically and academically,” Doege said. “I am excited to get to work with Coach Richard Mendoza and continue the athletic excellence at NBISD.”

Doege will be replacing Kelly Keresztury after she had served 10 years in NBISD. He will be the second assistant athletic director in district history.

Doege has nearly 20 years of coaching experience in baseball and football. He earned his Bachelor’s degree in kinesiology and education from Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, and he also holds a Master’s degree in Educational Leadership from Lamar University in Beaumont. Doege also has his teacher certification in secondary education in math, health and physical education.

“We are thrilled to have Coach Doege join the team here at NBISD. He’s a true professional with established coaching and school leadership experience,” said NBISD Athletic Director Richard Mendoza. “He is going to be a great asset to help our student-athletes and coaches whenever they need assistance.”

Since 2021, Doege has served as the assistant principal at Smithson Valley. Prior to being named assistant principal, he worked as a teacher and coach at the school for two years. He also has worked as a teacher and offensive coordinator of the football team at Kyle Lehman High School from 2018-2019. Before coaching in Kyle, he served as the head baseball coach at Clemens High School from 2007-2017. At Clemens, aside from his teaching duties, he also was an assistant football coach. He began his teaching and coaching career at Gonzales High School from 2003-2007.

Throughout his career, Doege has earned many honors. Recently, he was selected for the Pipeline to Principalship program at Comal ISD and he was selected as the Founder’s Day Assistant Principal of the Year. While at Clemens, he was named the Commitment to Excellence Teacher of the Year at Clemens in 2013 and runner up for the Greater San Antonio Baseball Coach of the Year in 2014. He has affiliations with the Texas High School Coaches Association, the Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association and the Texas Association of School Boards Principal Association.

Doege and his wife Delayna live in New Braunfels with their daughter Bracken, who will be an eighth grader at Oak Run Middle School and son Lincoln who will be a second grader at Veramendi Elementary. Bracken competes in athletics and cheer at ORMS.
