Mirabeau B. Lamar Elementary School, a cornerstone of New Braunfels ISD, celebrated 100 years of being open on Tuesday, Feb. 6. The celebration included a tour through the decades, esteemed guests who attended and worked at the school decades ago and a performance from the school’s choir.

The Lamar cheerleaders were on hand to welcome guests as they arrived and Lamar student ambassadors presented about each decade the school has been open.

Established in 1923, Lamar Elementary has been an integral part of the New Braunfels community, providing generations of students with the framework to be successful.

The 100-year celebration was held on the 100th day of this school year. Lamar Assistant Principal served as Master of Ceremonies.

Special guests included Mrs. Myra Lee Goff, who along with her family have a long history with Lamar. Her grandfather, A.C. Moeller built the school 100 years ago. Her mother, Cola Adams taught at Lamar and Myra went to Lamar and also taught there. All three of Myra’s children also attended the school.

“For a century, Lamar Elementary has been a place in our community where young minds have had the opportunity to flourish and futures have been shaped,” said Principal Chris Russell. “From its very beginnings to present time, Lamar has served as a special place to all who have walked its halls.”

Russell also pointed out that early in Lamar’s history it only had a handful of teachers and the City of New Braunfels had only about 6,000 residents. Today, New Braunfels ISD alone has nearly 10,000 students, he noted.

NBISD School Board President Eric Bergquist congratulated all of the Lamar family for this momentous achievement.

“As we celebrate the past – the last 100 years – of this school, we will also look to the future with optimism and excitement,” he said.

NBISD Superintendent Dr. Laurelyn Arterbury ended the ceremony with the gift of a plaque to Russell.

“This small token of recognition commemorates Lamar’s 100 years of educating the students of New Braunfels ISD,” she said. “Congratulations on 100 years of inspiration, achievement and learning. Thank you for shaping the minds and hearts of past generations and generations still to come.
