Pencils, headphones and scores of other school supplies were flying off the shelves of a local H-E-B on Thursday, Aug. 10. That’s because Klein Road Elementary teacher Mackenzie Yates was selected for a 90-second shopping spree through the back-to-school aisles at the H-E-B store at 2965 Interstate-35. “Getting to participate in the HEB back to school event was such a rewarding experience,” said Yates, a third-year kindergarten teacher. “It was such a joy to represent Klein Road Elementary and New Braunfels ISD.” H-E-B’s inaugural School Shopping Spree offered the opportunity for a teacher to shop for school supplies on behalf of the school. All of the supplies that were collected then will be distributed throughout the campus. Klein Road Elementary was selected from a random draw of Title I schools. A Title I school is a campus in which children from low income families make up at least 40 percent of the enrollment. Yates raced through the aisles, loading her shopping carts as her co-workers along with H-E-B employees cheered her on. The official time keeper also was letting her know how much time she had left throughout the 90 seconds. As the clock ticked, she pulled item after item off the racks, switching carts to maximize the number of supplies she collected. Yates even had a little help filling her baskets as H-E-B employees dumped supplies in as she passed them. After the 90 seconds elapsed, Yates threw her hands in their air with joy as the crowd cheered. H-E-Buddy, the store's mascot, showed up to take pictures with Yates and others. The group then headed to the cash register to see what the total cost was. The cash register was decorated with colorful balloons and school bus decor. The employee ringing up the items was also a surprise for Yates. Unbeknownst to either of them, the cashier, Kendall, and Yates were childhood friends. As Kendall rang up the items, the total bill of the shopping spree was a whopping $1,966.67. Yates then headed back to her campus, where the Klein Road Elementary staff greeted her and helped unload everything. The team was excited to have the supplies that will be useful for all of their students. “We just are so grateful for H-E-B, and their hearts for giving back to the community,” Yates said.
