Through a new community-based instruction (CBI) program, New Braunfels ISD Life Skills students were able to spread some holiday cheer through art.
In collaboration with Fine Arts, the NBISD Special Education department organized the Painting from the Heart project. Students gathered to paint with school art teachers on Monday, Dec. 11. At Lamar Elementary students painted holiday wreaths, while NBHS and Gateway students worked with art teacher Shannon Legg to create their own snowmen.
Painting from the Heart is a Staycation CBI that allows for collaboration between multiple departments within the school district, according to Heather Jarboe, special education coordinator. This CBI aims to create a community-like experience for students with significant disabilities, fostering a sense of belonging and skill development, she said.
The goal of the project is for students to develop and improve essential life skills such as communication, self-care, money management, and mobility to promote independence
This was the first time NBISD has participated in Painting from the Heart and students and teachers alike enjoyed creating art pieces and collaborating.
