A record-breaking 20 New Braunfels High School seniors signed their National Letters of Intent (NLI) to play collegiately in several sports during an April 24th signing ceremony.

The ceremony was held at the NBHS gym, which was filled with fellow students, coaches, family and friends. Signees put pen to paper as they revealed where they will be student-athletes next year.

Khristian Cole of the Unicorn basketball team will be headed to Schreiner University, a Division III school in Kerrville. Cole was a second team all-district performer in Class 6A-27 and holds the school record for charges taken. He was also fifth in the state in charges taken on the defensive end. As a member of Unicorns teams that have broken school records in wins in each of the last two seasons, Cole was named this year’s team defensive player of the year and warrior award winner. He is the son of Eboni and Keith Cole.

Daemyn Cortez is joining his Unicorn teammate in Kerrville as he will also play for Schreiner. Cortez was a 2-year letter winner for the Unicorns and was a member of teams that broke school records for wins in two consecutive seasons. He was a first-team all-district team member this season and was the Unicorns’ offensive MVP. Cortez was a member of the Chicken Express All-Star team as well as an S3ABC All Star. He is the son of Laure Vargas and grandson of Gerardo Vargas.

Rachel Gray will be continuing her cheer career at Trinity Valley Community College in Athens, Texas. Trinity Valley Community College was the Junior College Small Coed Grand Champion cheer squad in 2023. Throughout her cheer career, Gray has earned several accolades including National Cheer Association (NCA) Top All-American, and NCA All-American and a Texas Girls Coaches Association All-Star Athlete in 2023. She has been a member of teams that have earned second place at NCA in 2023 and fourth at UIL State in 2023. Additionally, she was a 4-time NCA champion and grand champion for 2024. Gray also was an all-star and 2-time CheerSport Champion as well as being a Summit Champion and runner-up at Cheerleading Worlds. She is the daughter of William and Katie Gray.

Cade Minus signed his NLI to play baseball at Texas A&M Kingsville. Texas A&M Kingsville is a Division II university that competes in the Lone Star Conference. As a Unicorn, Minus has been a starter on the baseball team for the last three years. He has tied the New Braunfels High School record in home runs in two different seasons (sophomore and junior). Minus has also earned all-district honors in his sophomore and junior years as the Unicorn baseball team season still is underway. Throughout high school he has also been a member of the Unicorn football team in which he also performed well enough to be named to the all-district team. He is the son of Stephen and Shelley Minus.

Kayleigh Hoskins will be joining the track and field team at Southern Illinois University. Southern Illinois is located in Carbondale, Illinois and is a NCAA Division I university that competes in the Missouri Valley Conference. Hoskins will compete in pole vaulting for the Salukis. During her time at NBHS, she placed second at the district track meet and was a regional qualifier. She also was a member of the Unicorn volleyball team that were district champions. As a volleyball player, she was an all-district performer and she was named academic all-district. She is the daughter of Douglas and Mignon Kenagy.

Chloe Guzman has signed to play soccer at McPherson College, an NAIA school located in McPherson, Kansas. Guzman has been an academic all-state and academic all-district performer during her time with the Lady Unicorns. During her high school career, she has also been a member of the Unicorn Band. She is the daughter of Edwin and Linda Guzman.

Jaydon James will be joining the basketball team at North Central College, a Division III school that is located in Naperville, Illinois. James is a 3-time letter winner and was a first-team all-district performer with the Unicorns. He was a member of a Unicorn team that broke the school record for wins this season, and was the first team to win district in three decades. James is the son of Marcella Baca.

Chloe Montanez is heading to Kerrville to play basketball at Schreiner University. Montanez was a 3-time all-district performer for the Lady Unicorns. She was also named to the academic all-district team as a junior senior. Additionally, Montanez was selected to play in the Chicken Express All-Star Game and the San Antonio Sports All-Star Game. She is the daughter of Rodney and Angie Montanez.

Braeden Cundiff signed to continue his football career at Southwestern University. Southwestern is a Division III school that is located in Georgetown, Texas. Cundiff will be attending Southwestern on a Merit Scholarship. During his time on the gridiron, Cundiff earned first-team all-district honors. He was also named the team’s defensive MVP. He is the son of Chad and Amy Cundiff.

Sam Renno has signed to continue his soccer career with Austin College, a Division III school that is located in Sherman, Texas. Renno was a 4-time academic all-district award winner and a 4-year letter winner with the Unicorns. He also was academic all-state as a senior. He was named to the all-district second team in his junior year and was a first-team all-district performer as a senior. He is the son of Ed and Amy Renno.

Serenity Cabrera has signed to play tennis at Texas Lutheran University, a Division III school in Seguin. Cabrera picked tennis only three years ago and previously played soccer, cheer, track and cross country. She also spent one year living at the John Newcombe Tennis Academy. She is the daughter of Jacob and Jessica Cabrera.

Anni Keal will be playing basketball at Sul Ross State University in Alpine, Texas next season. Keal has been a starter and 2-year letter winner for the Lady Unicorns. She was also an academic all-district performer. She is the daughter of Rich and Gyongyi Keal.

Devin Barthelme will be heading to play baseball for Ranger College, a junior college located in Ranger, Texas. Barthleme is a member of the varsity Unicorn baseball team. He is the son of Ron and Heidi Barthelme.

Caden Bryan has signed to play soccer for Schreiner University. During his time with the Unicorns, Bryan was a 4-year letter winner and 3-year starter. He was the 2023 District Defender of the Year. He was also a second-team all-district performer in 2024. As a junior and senior, he was named the team defender of the year. Bryan was a leadership council member and team captain. He is the son of Dennis and Carla Bryan.

Wyatt Soell will be signing with Ranger College to continue his baseball playing career. During his time with the Unicorns, he was named academic all-district. Spell also played freshman and JV football. He is the son of Harvey and Carrie Soell.

Jesse James Haughton will be heading to Mendoza, Argentina, where he will join Mendoza United F.C. He is a 3-year letter winner with the Unicorns and was named first-team all-district and was the district offensive player of the year. Haughton was a team captain and earned San Antonio goal of the week during his career. He was the leading goal scorer as a junior and has played in Italy with the Texas Olympic Development Program. He is the son of Nick and Jessica Haughton.

Sofia Bendele has signed to join the beach volleyball team at Tarleton State University. Tarleton State is a Division I university located in Stephenville, Texas. Bendele was a 3-year letter winner in volleyball and won back-to-back district championships. She earned all-district honors as well as academic all-state. Additionally, Bendele was awarded the Heart and Hustle Award and Unicorn Pride Award. She is the daughter of Clint and Stacey Bendele.

Emery Rosales will continue her soccer career at Schreiner University. Rosales will join her sister Kortney, who also played for the Unicorns, on the Schreiner soccer team. She is the daughter of Elton and Frances Rosales.

Wyatt Edwards will be heading to Ranger College where he will be a pitcher for the Ranger baseball team. As a Unicorn, he was a second-team all-district performer. Edwards also was a member of the tennis team for three years. He is the son of Chad and Patricia Edwards.

Hannah Sanchez has signed to play soccer for Schreiner University in Kerrville. Sanchez was the district forward of the year and she has been a first-team all-district performer. Additionally, she was academic all-district, and she was named player of the game. She is the daughter of Javier and Natalia Sanchez.
