New Braunfels ISD Head Chef Jamoll “Chef Jay” Leday bounces from campus to campus teaching students about new ingredients as part of The Roving Chef program.

Southwest Foodservice Excellence (SFE) is NBISD’s food service management partner and through them Chef Jay teaches students how to cook a variety of items. As part of The Roving Chef, Chef Jay invites students to make a dish, going through each step of the process. The students then eat the final product for lunch.

On Friday, April 12, Chef Jay and the child nutrition department invited Gateway Transitional Program students to the Central Kitchen to prepare cupcakes and calzones. Students piped icing and colorfully decorated cupcakes with sprinkles. That was followed by stuffing calzones with cheese and topping them with an egg wash for some color.

The plan is to keep this program going so students can become more knowledgeable about how their food is made, while also making them aware of the different varieties of ingredients.
